KinЙЎ Arthur

[kЙЄЕ‹] ['Й‘:ОёЗќ]

Chapter 1,

['К§Г¦ptЗќ] [wКЊn],

in which Uther PendraЙЎon fell in love with lady IЙЎraine,

[ɪn] [wɪʧ] [ˏju:θǝ] [pɛn'dræɡǝn] [fɛl] [ɪn] [lʌv] [wɪð] ['leɪdi] [ɪ'ɡreɪn],

a wife of another man,

[ǝ] [waɪf] [ɒv] [ǝ'nʌðǝ] [mæn],

Merlin helped Uther have what he wanted,

['mɜ:lɪn] [hɛlpt] [ˏju:θǝ] [hæv] [wɒt] [hi:] ['wɒntɪd],

and Uther and IЙЎraine had a child by the name of Arthur

[ænd] [ˏju:θǝ] [ænd] [ɪ'ɡreɪn] [hæd] [ǝ] [ʧaɪld] [baɪ] [ðǝ] [neɪm] [ɒv] ['ɑ:θǝ]

It was in the days[1 - It was in the days… – и так случилось во времена…] of Uther Pendraɡon,

[ɪt] [wɒz] [ɪn] [ðǝ] [deɪz] [ɒv] [ˏju:θǝ] [pɛn'dræɡǝn],

when he was kinЙЎ of all EnЙЎland,

[wЙ›n] [hi:] [wЙ’z] [kЙЄЕ‹] [Й’v] [Й”:l] ['ЙЄЕ‹ЙЎlЗќnd],

that there was a miЙЎhty duke in Cornwall

[ðæt] [ðeǝ] [wɒz] [ǝ] ['maɪti] [dju:k] [ɪn] ['kɔ:nwɔ:l]

that held war aЙЎainst him for a lonЙЎ time.

[ðæt] [hɛld] [wɔ:r] [ǝ'ɡɛnst] [hɪm] [fɔ:r] [ǝ] [lɒŋ] [taɪm].

That duke was called the Duke of TintaЙЎil.

[ðæt] [dju:k] [wɒz] [kɔ:ld] [ðǝ] [dju:k] [ɒv] ['tɪntǝɡil].

One time kinɡ Uther sent for this duke[2 - sent for this duke –

askinЙЎ him to brinЙЎ his wife with him,

because she was known to be a fair and wise lady,

[bЙЄ'kЙ’z] [Кѓi:] [wЙ’z] [nЗќКЉn] [tu:] [bi:] [Зќ] [feЗќr] [Г¦nd] [waЙЄz] ['leЙЄdi],

and her name was IЙЎraine.

When the duke and his wife came to the kin

the ɡreat lords that were in the kinɡ’s council

[ðǝ] [ɡreɪt] [lɔ:dz] [ðæt] [wɜ:r] [ɪn] [ðǝ] [kɪŋz] ['kaʊns(ǝ)l]

helped them make peace.

[hЙ›lpt] [Г°Й›m] [meЙЄk] [pi:s].

The kinЙЎ liked IЙЎraine very much,

and fell in love with her,

[Г¦nd] [fЙ›l] [ЙЄn] [lКЊv] [wЙЄГ°] [hЙњ:],

and desired to lay with her.

But she was a ЙЎood woman,

[bКЊt] [Кѓi:] [wЙ’z] [Зќ] [ЙЎКЉd] ['wКЉmЗќn],

and did not accept the kinɡ’s offer.

[Г¦nd] [dЙЄd] [nЙ’t] [Зќk'sЙ›pt] [Г°Зќ] [kЙЄЕ‹z] ['Й’fЗќ].

She came to her husband the duke and said,

[Кѓi:] [keЙЄm] [tu:] [hЙњ:] ['hКЊzbЗќnd] [Г°Зќ] [dju:k] [Г¦nd] [sЙ›d],

“I suppose that we were sent for so that I be dishonored.

“[aɪ] [sǝ'pǝʊz] [ðæt] [wi:] [wɜ:] [sɛnt] [fɔ:] [sǝʊ] [ðæt] [aɪ] [bi:] [dɪs'ɒnǝd].

I advise you that we depart from here immediately,

[aɪ] [ǝd'vaɪz] [ju:] [ðæt] [wi:] [dɪ'pɑ:t] [frɒm] [hɪǝr] [ɪ'mi:diǝtli],

and ride all niɡht to our own castle.”

[ænd] [raɪd] [ɔ:l] [naɪt] [tu:] ['aʊǝr] [ǝʊn] ['kɑ:sl].”

She also said that it would be wise to not tell the kin

[ʃi:] ['ɔ:lsǝʊ] [sɛd] [ðæt] [ɪt] [wʊd] [bi:] [waɪz] [tu:] [nɒt] [tɛl] [ðǝ] [kɪŋ]

and the lords that they were leavinЙЎ.

[ænd] [ðǝ] [lɔ:dz] [ðæt] [ðeɪ] [wɜ:] ['li:vɪŋ].

So they departed.

When kinЙЎ Uther learned that they left,

[wɛn] [kɪŋ] [ˏju:θǝ] [lɜ:nt] [ðæt] [ðeɪ] [lɛft],

he was very anЙЎry.

[hi:] [wЙ’z] ['vЙ›ri] ['Г¦Е‹ЙЎri].

He called his council and told the lords

[hi:] [kЙ”:ld] [hЙЄz] ['kaКЉns(Зќ)l] [Г¦nd] [tЗќКЉld] [Г°Зќ] [lЙ”:dz]

that the Duke of TintaЙЎil rode away with IЙЎraine.

[ðæt] [ðǝ] [dju:k] [ɒv] ['tɪntǝɡil] [rǝʊd] [ǝ'weɪ] [wɪð] [ɪ'ɡreɪn].

They advised the kinЙЎ to send for the duke

and his wife to catch them and call them back,

[ænd] [hɪz] [waɪf] [tu:] [kæʧ] [ðɛm] [ænd] [kɔ:l] [ðɛm] [bæk],

and if they didn’t want to come back,

[ænd] [ɪf] [ðeɪ] [dɪdnt] [wɒnt] [tu:] [kʌm] [bæk],

then the kinЙЎ had a reason to start a war aЙЎainst them.

[ðɛn] [ðǝ] [kɪŋ] [hæd] [ǝ] ['ri:zn] [tu:] [stɑ:t] [ǝ] [wɔ:r] [ǝ'ɡɛnst] [ðɛm].

They sent the messenЙЎers,

[ðeɪ] [sɛnt] [ðǝ] ['mɛsɪnʤǝz],

and the messenЙЎers cauЙЎht the duke and his wife midway.

[ænd] [ðǝ] ['mɛsɪnʤǝz] [kɔ:t] [ðǝ] [dju:k] [ænd] [hɪz] [waɪf] ['mɪd'weɪ].

The duke said that neither he nor his wife[3 - neither he nor his wife – ни он, ни его жена] would come back.

[ðǝ] [dju:k] [sɛd] [ðæt] ['naɪðǝ] [hi:] [nɔ:] [hɪz] [waɪf] [wʊd] [kʌm] [bæk].

KinЙЎ Uther was very anЙЎry to hear that messaЙЎe.

[kɪŋ] [ˏju:θǝ] [wɒz] ['vɛri] ['æŋɡri] [tu:] [hɪǝ] [ðæt] ['mɛsɪʤ].

He sent the messenЙЎers aЙЎain to warn the duke

[hi:] [sɛnt] [ðǝ] ['mɛsɪnʤǝz] [ǝ'ɡɛn] [tu:] [wɔ:n] [ðǝ] [dju:k]

that he should prepare for a war,

[ðæt] [hi:] [ʃʊd] [prɪ'peǝ] [fɔ:r] [ǝ] [wɔ:],

and that in less than forty days,

[ænd] [ðæt] [ɪn] [lɛs] [ðæn] ['fɔ:ti] [deɪz],

Uther would take his biЙЎЙЎest castle from him.

When the duke heard this warnin

[wЙ›n] [Г°Зќ] [dju:k] [hЙњ:d] [Г°ЙЄs] ['wЙ”:nЙЄЕ‹],

he started to prepare his castles for war.

[hi:] ['stЙ‘:tЙЄd] [tu:] [prЙЄ'peЗќ] [hЙЄz] ['kЙ‘:slz] [fЙ”:] [wЙ”:].

The duke had two stronЙЎ castles,

[ðǝ] [dju:k] [hæd] [tu:] [strɒŋ] ['kɑ:slz],

the biЙЎЙЎer one was called Terrabil,

[Г°Зќ] ['bЙЄЙЎЗќ] [wКЊn] [wЙ’z] [kЙ”:ld] ['tЙ›rЗќbil],

and the smaller one was called TintaЙЎil.

[Г¦nd] [Г°Зќ] ['smЙ”:lЗќ] [wКЊn] [wЙ’z] [kЙ”:ld] ['tЙЄntЗќЙЎil].

The duke put his wife IЙЎraine in the castle of TintaЙЎil,

and he put himself in the castle of Terrabil,

[Г¦nd] [hi:] [pКЉt] [hЙЄm'sЙ›lf] [ЙЄn] [Г°Зќ] ['kЙ‘:sl] [Й’v] ['tЙ›rЗќbil],

which had many secret exits and passaЙЎeways.

[wɪʧ] [hæd] ['mɛni] ['si:krɪt] ['ɛksɪts] [ænd] ['pæsɪʤweɪz].

Then in all haste[4 - in all haste – в великой поспешности] came Uther with a ɡreat army,

[Г°Й›n] [ЙЄn] [Й”:l] [heЙЄst] [keЙЄm] [ЛЏju:ОёЗќ] [wЙЄГ°] [Зќ] [ЙЎreЙЄt] ['Й‘:mi],

and laid a sieЙЎe to the castle of Terrabil.

[Г¦nd] [leЙЄd] [Зќ] [si:К¤] [tu:] [Г°Зќ] ['kЙ‘:sl] [Й’v] ['tЙ›rЗќbil].

And there was a ЙЎreat war, and many people were slain.

But then Uther fell sick,

[bКЊt] [Г°Й›n] [ЛЏju:ОёЗќ] [fЙ›l] [sЙЄk],

because of his anЙЎer and his love to IЙЎraine.

A noble kniЙЎht named Sir Ulfius came to kinЙЎ Uther

and asked why he was sick.

[Г¦nd] [Й‘:skt] [waЙЄ] [hi:] [wЙ’z] [sЙЄk].

“I will tell you,” said the kinɡ,

“[aɪ] [wɪl] [tɛl] [ju:],” [sɛd] [ðǝ] [kɪŋ],

“I am sick because of anɡer and love to fair Iɡraine.”

“[aɪ] [æm] [sɪk] [bɪ'kɒz] [ɒv] ['æŋɡǝr] [ænd] [lʌv] [tu:] [feǝ] [ɪ'ɡreɪn].”

“Well, my lord,” said Sir Ulfius,

“[wɛl], [maɪ] [lɔ:d],” [sɛd] [sɜ:] ['ʊlfɪǝs],

“I will find Merlin,

“[aɪ] [wɪl] [faɪnd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

and he will prepare a remedy that will cure you.”

[ænd] [hi:] [wɪl] [prɪ'peǝr] [ǝ] ['rɛmɪdi] [ðæt] [wɪl] [kjʊǝ] [ju:].”

So Ulfius departed,

and after ЙЎreat adventures he met Merlin.

[ænd] ['ɑ:ftǝ] [ɡreɪt] [ǝd'vɛnʧǝz] [hi:] [mɛt] ['mɜ:lɪn].

“Who are you seekinɡ?” Merlin asked him.

“[hu:] [ɑ:] [ju:] ['si:kɪŋ]?” ['mɜ:lɪn] [ɑ:skt] [hɪm].

Sir Ulfius took a little pause to think.

“I will tell you who you are seekinɡ,” said Merlin.

“[aɪ] [wɪl] [tɛl] [ju:] [hu:] [ju:] [ɑ:] ['si:kɪŋ],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn].

“You are seekinɡ Merlin,

“[ju:] [ɑ:] ['si:kɪŋ] ['mɜ:lɪn],

and you should seek no further,

[Г¦nd] [ju:] [КѓКЉd] [si:k] [nЗќКЉ] ['fЙњ:Г°Зќ],

because I am he.

[bЙЄ'kЙ’z] [aЙЄ] [Г¦m] [hi:].

If KinЙЎ Uther rewards me,

and swears to do exactly as I say,

[ænd] [sweǝz] [tu:] [du:] [ɪɡ'zæktli] [æz] [aɪ] [seɪ],

I will ɡive him what he wants so much.”

[aɪ] [wɪl] [ɡɪv] [hɪm] [wɒt] [hi:] [wɒnts] [sǝʊ] [mʌʧ].”

“I can promise you,” said Sir Ulfius,

“[aɪ] [kæn] ['prɒmɪs] [ju:],” [sɛd] [sɜ:] ['ʊlfɪǝs],

“that he will reward you and do as you ask,

“[ðæt] [hi:] [wɪl] [rɪ'wɔ:d] [ju:] [ænd] [du:] [æz] [ju:] [ɑ:sk],

as lonɡ as you ask reasonable thinɡs of him.”

[æz] [lɒŋ] [æz] [ju:] [ɑ:sk] ['ri:znǝbl] [θɪŋz] [ɒv] [hɪm].”

“Ride back to Uther,” said Merlin,

“[raɪd] [bæk] [tu:] [ˏju:θǝ],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

“And I will not be lonɡ behind[5 - will not be long behind – прибуду вслед за тобой].”

“[ænd] [aɪ] [wɪl] [nɒt] [bi:] [lɒŋ] [bɪ'haɪnd].”

Ulfius was ЙЎlad to hear that,

['ʊlfɪǝs] [wɒz] [ɡlæd] [tu:] [hɪǝ] [ðæt],

and rode in all haste back to kinЙЎ Uther PendraЙЎon,

[ænd] [rǝʊd] [ɪn] [ɔ:l] [heɪst] [bæk] [tu:] [kɪŋ] [ˏju:θǝ] [pɛn'dræɡǝn],

and told him that he had met Merlin.

[ænd] [tǝʊld] [hɪm] [ðæt] [hi:] [hæd] [mɛt] ['mɜ:lɪn].

“Where is he?” said the kinɡ.

“[weǝr] [ɪz] [hi:]?” [sɛd] [ðǝ] [kɪŋ].

“Sir,” said Ulfius, “He will be here soon.”

“[sɜ:],” [sɛd] ['ʊlfɪǝs], “[hi:] [wɪl] [bi:] [hɪǝ] [su:n].”

As he said that,

[æz] [hi:] [sɛd] [ðæt],

he saw that Merlin was standinЙЎ at the entrance to the pavilion.

[hi:] [sɔ:] [ðæt] ['mɜ:lɪn] [wɒz] ['stændɪŋ] [æt] [ði] ['ɛntrǝns] [tu:] [ðǝ] [pǝ'vɪljǝn].

Then Merlin came to the kin

and when the kinЙЎ saw him,

[Г¦nd] [wЙ›n] [Г°Зќ] [kЙЄЕ‹] [sЙ”:] [hЙЄm],

he said he was welcome.

[hi:] [sЙ›d] [hi:] [wЙ’z] ['wЙ›lkЗќm].

“Sir,” said Merlin,

“[sɜ:],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

“I know what you wish with all your heart,

“[aɪ] [nǝʊ] [wɒt] [ju:] [wɪʃ] [wɪð] [ɔ:l] [jɔ:] [hɑ:t],

so if you swear to me as a kinЙЎ that you will do as I say,

[sǝʊ] [ɪf] [ju:] [sweǝ] [tu:] [mi:] [æz] [ǝ] [kɪŋ] [ðæt] [ju:] [wɪl] [du:] [æz] [aɪ] [seɪ],

you will have what you wish.”

[ju:] [wɪl] [hæv] [wɒt] [ju:] [wɪʃ].”

The kinЙЎ swore on the Four EvanЙЎelists[6 - swore on the Four Evangelists – поклялся именами четырёх евангелистов (авторов канонических Евангелий – Матфея, Марка, Луки Рё Р?

[ðǝ] [kɪŋ] [swɔ:r] [ɒn] [ðǝ] [fɔ:r] [ɪ'vænʤɪlɪsts].

“Sir,” said Merlin, “This is what I want from you:

“[sɜ:],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn], “[ðɪs] [ɪz] [wɒt] [aɪ] [wɒnt] [frɒm] [ju:]:

the first niЙЎht that you will lie with IЙЎraine,

[ðǝ] [fɜ:st] [naɪt] [ðæt] [ju:] [wɪl] [laɪ] [wɪð] [ɪ'ɡreɪn],

you will conceive a child.

[ju:] [wЙЄl] [kЗќn'si:v] [Зќ] [К§aЙЄld].

When this child is born,

[wЙ›n] [Г°ЙЄs] [К§aЙЄld] [ЙЄz] [bЙ”:n],

he will be delivered to me to nourish.

This will brinЙЎ ЙЎreat ЙЎlory to you

and your child, if he proves worth it[7 - if he will prove worth – если он окажется достойным].”

[ænd] [jɔ:] [ʧaɪld], [ɪf] [hi:] [pru:vz] [wɜ:θ] [ɪt].”

“Let it be so[8 - Let it be so – да будет так],” said Uther.

“[lɛt] [ɪt] [bi:] [sǝʊ],” [sɛd] [ˏju:θǝ].

“You will have the child.”

“[ju:] [wɪl] [hæv] [ðǝ] [ʧaɪld].”

“Get ready,” said Merlin,

“[ɡɛt] ['rɛdi],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

“Toniɡht you will lie with Iɡraine in the castle of Tintaɡil.

“[tǝ'naɪt] [ju:] [wɪl] [laɪ] [wɪð] [ɪ'ɡreɪn] [ɪn] [ðǝ] ['kɑ:sl] [ɒv] ['tɪntǝɡil].

You will look like her husband the duke,

Sir Ulfius will look like Sir Brastias, one of the duke’s kniɡhts,

and I will look like Sir Jordanus, another of the duke’s kniɡhts.

[Г¦nd] [aЙЄ] [wЙЄl] [lКЉk] [laЙЄk] [sЙњ:] ['К¤Й”:dЗќnЗќs], [Зќ'nКЊГ°Зќr] [Й’v] [Г°Зќ] [dju:ks] [naЙЄts].

Do not talk a lot with her nor her men,

[du:] [nЙ’t] [tЙ”:k] [Зќ] [lЙ’t] [wЙЄГ°] [hЙњ:] [nЙ”:] [hЙњ:] [mЙ›n],

Just say that you are sick.

[ʤʌst] [seɪ] [ðæt] [ju:] [ɑ:] [sɪk].

Go to bed, and rise in the early mornin

[ЙЎЗќКЉ] [tu:] [bЙ›d], [Г¦nd] [raЙЄz] [ЙЄn] [Г°i] ['Йњ:li] ['mЙ”:nЙЄЕ‹],

and I will come to brinɡ you back.”

[ænd] [aɪ] [wɪl] [kʌm] [tu:] [brɪŋ] [ju:] [bæk].”

They rode to the castle of TintaЙЎil.

[Г°eЙЄ] [rЗќКЉd] [tu:] [Г°Зќ] ['kЙ‘:sl] [Й’v] ['tЙЄntЗќЙЎil].

The duke saw them depart from the sieЙЎe of Terrabil,

[Г°Зќ] [dju:k] [sЙ”:] [Г°Й›m] [dЙЄ'pЙ‘:t] [frЙ’m] [Г°Зќ] [si:К¤] [Й’v] ['tЙ›rЗќbil],

so came out to fiɡht with the kinɡ’s men.

[sЗќКЉ] [keЙЄm] [aКЉt] [tu:] [faЙЄt] [wЙЄГ°] [Г°Зќ] [kЙЄЕ‹z] [mЙ›n].

That niЙЎht he was killed

[ðæt] [naɪt] [hi:] [wɒz] [kɪld]

even before Uther came to TintaЙЎil.

['i:vЗќn] [bЙЄ'fЙ”:] [ЛЏju:ОёЗќ] [keЙЄm] [tu:] ['tЙЄntЗќЙЎil].

After the death of the duke,

KinЙЎ Uther laid with IЙЎraine,

lookinЙЎ like the duke three hours after the duke was dead.

['lКЉkЙЄЕ‹] [laЙЄk] [Г°Зќ] [dju:k] [Оёri:] ['aКЉЗќz] ['Й‘:ftЗќ] [Г°Зќ] [dju:k] [wЙ’z] [dЙ›d].

In the early morninЙЎ Merlin came to Uther to take him back.

[ɪn] [ði] ['ɜ:li] ['mɔ:nɪŋ] ['mɜ:lɪn] [keɪm] [tu:] [ˏju:θǝ] [tu:] [teɪk] [hɪm] [bæk].

Uther kissed lady IЙЎraine and departed in all haste.

[ЛЏju:ОёЗќ] [kЙЄst] ['leЙЄdi] [ЙЄ'ЙЎreЙЄn] [Г¦nd] [dЙЄ'pЙ‘:tЙЄd] [ЙЄn] [Й”:l] [heЙЄst].

When the lady heard

[wЙ›n] [Г°Зќ] ['leЙЄdi] [hЙњ:d]

that her husband the duke was killed that niЙЎht,

[ðæt] [hɜ:] ['hʌzbǝnd] [ðǝ] [dju:k] [wɒz] [kɪld] [ðæt] [naɪt],

she wondered,

[Кѓi:] ['wКЊndЗќd],

who came to her chambers lookinЙЎ like the duke.

She mourned privately, but didn’t tell anybody.

[Кѓi:] [mЙ”:nd] ['praЙЄvЙЄtli], [bКЊt] [dЙЄdnt] [tЙ›l] ['Й›nЙЄЛЏbЙ’di].

Soon, the lords of kinЙЎ Uther asked him

[su:n], [Г°Зќ] [lЙ”:dz] [Й’v] [kЙЄЕ‹] [ЛЏju:ОёЗќ] [Й‘:skt] [hЙЄm]

to end the war between him and IЙЎraine.

He was happy to do that,

[hi:] [wɒz] ['hæpi] [tu:] [du:] [ðæt],

and he made Sir Ulfius to be the messenЙЎer.

[ænd] [hi:] [meɪd] [sɜ:] ['ʊlfɪǝs] [tu:] [bi:] [ðǝ] ['mɛsɪnʤǝ].

“Now we will do well,” said Ulfius.

“[naʊ] [wi:] [wɪl] [du:] [wɛl],” [sɛd] ['ʊlfɪǝs].

“Our kinɡ is a stronɡ man,

“['aʊǝ] [kɪŋ] [ɪz] [ǝ] [strɒŋ] [mæn],

and he doesn’t have a wife,

[ænd] [hi:] [dʌznt] [hæv] [ǝ] [waɪf],

and my lady IЙЎraine is a fair lady.

It would be ЙЎreat joy for us all

and it miɡht please the kinɡ to make her his queen.”

[ænd] [ɪt] [maɪt] [pli:z] [ðǝ] [kɪŋ] [tu:] [meɪk] [hɜ:] [hɪz] [kwi:n].”

So kinЙЎ Uther took IЙЎraine as a wife

and made her his queen.

[Г¦nd] [meЙЄd] [hЙњ:] [hЙЄz] [kwi:n].

But the queen was preЙЎnant,

[bКЊt] [Г°Зќ] [kwi:n] [wЙ’z] ['prЙ›ЙЎnЗќnt],

and soon everyone could see that.

[ænd] [su:n] ['ɛvrɪwʌn] [kʊd] [si:] [ðæt].

So the kinЙЎ came to her

and asked who the father of the child was.

[Г¦nd] [Й‘:skt] [hu:] [Г°Зќ] ['fЙ‘:Г°Зќr] [Й’v] [Г°Зќ] [К§aЙЄld] [wЙ’z].

She didn’t want to tell him.

[Кѓi:] [dЙЄdnt] [wЙ’nt] [tu:] [tЙ›l] [hЙЄm].

“Tell me the truth,” said the kinɡ,

“[tɛl] [mi:] [ðǝ] [tru:θ],” [sɛd] [ðǝ] [kɪŋ],

“And I promise I will love you even more after that.”

“[ænd] [aɪ] ['prɒmɪs] [aɪ] [wɪl] [lʌv] [ju:] ['i:vǝn] [mɔ:r] ['ɑ:ftǝ] [ðæt].”

“I will tell you the truth,” said Iɡraine.

“[aɪ] [wɪl] [tɛl] [ju:] [ðǝ] [tru:θ],” [sɛd] [ɪ'ɡreɪn].

“The same niɡht my lord was killed,

“[ðǝ] [seɪm] [naɪt] [maɪ] [lɔ:d] [wɒz] [kɪld],

a man came to me at the castle of TintaЙЎil,

[ǝ] [mæn] [keɪm] [tu:] [mi:] [æt] [ðǝ] ['kɑ:sl] [ɒv] ['tɪntǝɡil],

and he looked exactly like my lord,

[ænd] [hi:] [lʊkt] [ɪɡ'zæktli] [laɪk] [maɪ] [lɔ:d],

and with him were two men

[Г¦nd] [wЙЄГ°] [hЙЄm] [wЙњ:] [tu:] [mЙ›n]

lookinɡ like my lord’s kniɡhts Sir Brastias and Sir Jordanus.

So I went into bed with him,

[sЗќКЉ] [aЙЄ] [wЙ›nt] ['ЙЄntu:] [bЙ›d] [wЙЄГ°] [hЙЄm],

as I should have with my lord,

[æz] [aɪ] [ʃʊd] [hæv] [wɪð] [maɪ] [lɔ:d],

and that niɡht we conceived a child.”

[ænd] [ðæt] [naɪt] [wi:] [kǝn'si:vd] [ǝ] [ʧaɪld].”

“You’re tellinɡ me the truth,” said Uther,

“[jʊǝ] ['tɛlɪŋ] [mi:] [ðǝ] [tru:θ],” [sɛd] [ˏju:θǝ],

“Because it was I who came to lay with you that niɡht.

“[bɪ'kɒz] [ɪt] [wɒz] [aɪ] [hu:] [keɪm] [tu:] [leɪ] [wɪð] [ju:] [ðæt] [naɪt].

And I am the father of the child.”

[ænd] [aɪ] [æm] [ðǝ] ['fɑ:ðǝr] [ɒv] [ðǝ] [ʧaɪld].”

And he told her

[Г¦nd] [hi:] [tЗќКЉld] [hЙњ:]

how all of that happened as Merlin planned.

[haʊ] [ɔ:l] [ɒv] [ðæt] ['hæpǝnd] [æz] ['mɜ:lɪn] [plænd].

She was happy to know

[ʃi:] [wɒz] ['hæpi] [tu:] [nǝʊ]

that Uther was the father.

[ðæt] [ˏju:θǝ] [wɒz] [ðǝ] ['fɑ:ðǝ].

Soon Merlin came to the kin

[su:n] ['mЙњ:lЙЄn] [keЙЄm] [tu:] [Г°Зќ] [kЙЄЕ‹].

“Sir,” he said,

“[sɜ:],” [hi:] [sɛd],

“You swore that

“[ju:] [swɔ:] [ðæt]

you would ɡive the child to me to nourish.”

[ju:] [wʊd] [ɡɪv] [ðǝ] [ʧaɪld] [tu:] [mi:] [tu:] ['nʌrɪʃ].”

“As you wish,” Uther said.

“[æz] [ju:] [wɪʃ],” [ˏju:θǝ] [sɛd].

“I know a lord of yours in this land,” said Merlin,

“[aɪ] [nǝʊ] [ǝ] [lɔ:d] [ɒv] [jɔ:z] [ɪn] [ðɪs] [lænd],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

“his name is Sir Ector,

“[hɪz] [neɪm] [ɪz] [sɜ:] ['ɛktǝ],

and he is a true and faithful kniЙЎht,

[Г¦nd] [hi:] [ЙЄz] [Зќ] [tru:] [Г¦nd] ['feЙЄОёfКЉl] [naЙЄt],

and he owns many parts in EnЙЎland and Wales.

[Г¦nd] [hi:] [ЗќКЉnz] ['mЙ›ni] [pЙ‘:ts] [ЙЄn] ['ЙЄЕ‹ЙЎlЗќnd] [Г¦nd] [weЙЄlz].

Send for him, and tell him

[sЙ›nd] [fЙ”:] [hЙЄm], [Г¦nd] [tЙ›l] [hЙЄm]

that in the name of his love to you,

[ðæt] [ɪn] [ðǝ] [neɪm] [ɒv] [hɪz] [lʌv] [tu:] [ju:],

he should put his own child to nourishinЙЎ of another woman,

[hi:] [КѓКЉd] [pКЉt] [hЙЄz] [ЗќКЉn] [К§aЙЄld] [tu:] ['nКЊrЙЄКѓЙЄЕ‹] [Й’v] [Зќ'nКЊГ°Зќ] ['wКЉmЗќn],

and that your child should be nourished by Sir Ector’s wife.

[ænd] [ðæt] [jɔ:] [ʧaɪld] [ʃʊd] [bi:] ['nʌrɪʃt] [baɪ] [sɜ:] ['ɛktǝs] [waɪf].

And when the child is born,

[Г¦nd] [wЙ›n] [Г°Зќ] [К§aЙЄld] [ЙЄz] [bЙ”:n],

have him secretly brouЙЎht to me unchristened,

[hæv] [hɪm] ['si:krɪtli] [brɔ:t] [tu:] [mi:] [ˏʌn'krɪsnd],

throuɡh the back door of the castle.”

[θru:] [ðǝ] [bæk] [dɔ:r] [ɒv] [ðǝ] ['kɑ:sl].”

Uther did as Merlin said.

[ЛЏju:ОёЗќ] [dЙЄd] [Г¦z] ['mЙњ:lЙЄn] [sЙ›d].

He called Sir Ector, and ЙЎranted him ЙЎreat rewards.

Sir Ector swore to do as the kinЙЎ told him.

When the child was born,

[wЙ›n] [Г°Зќ] [К§aЙЄld] [wЙ’z] [bЙ”:n],

Uther commanded two kniЙЎhts

and two ladies to brinЙЎ the child,

[Г¦nd] [tu:] ['leЙЄdЙЄz] [tu:] [brЙЄЕ‹] [Г°Зќ] [К§aЙЄld],

bound in a cloth of ЙЎold,

throuЙЎh the back door of the castle

[θru:] [ðǝ] [bæk] [dɔ:r] [ɒv] [ðǝ] ['kɑ:sl]

and ЙЎive him to the poor man they meet outside.

[ænd] [ɡɪv] [hɪm] [tu:] [ðǝ] [pʊǝ] [mæn] [ðeɪ] [mi:t] [ˏaʊt'saɪd].

So the child was brouЙЎht to Merlin,

[sЗќКЉ] [Г°Зќ] [К§aЙЄld] [wЙ’z] [brЙ”:t] [tu:] ['mЙњ:lЙЄn],

and Merlin took him to Sir Ector

and brouЙЎht a priest to christen the child,

[Г¦nd] [brЙ”:t] [Зќ] [pri:st] [tu:] ['krЙЄsn] [Г°Зќ] [К§aЙЄld],

and he called him Arthur.

[Г¦nd] [hi:] [kЙ”:ld] [hЙЄm] ['Й‘:ОёЗќ].

And Sir Ector’s wife nourished the child as her own.

[Г¦nd] [sЙњ:] ['Й›ktЗќs] [waЙЄf] ['nКЊrЙЄКѓt] [Г°Зќ] [К§aЙЄld] [Г¦z] [hЙњ:r] [ЗќКЉn].

Chapter 2,

['К§Г¦ptЗќ] [tu:],

in which Uther PendraЙЎon died,

[ɪn] [wɪʧ] [ˏju:θǝ] [pɛn'dræɡǝn] [daɪd],

Arthur pulled a sword from a stone

and became KinЙЎ

Two years after Arthur was born,

[tu:] [jЙЄЗќz] ['Й‘:ftЗќr] ['Й‘:ОёЗќ] [wЙ’z] [bЙ”:n],

kinЙЎ Uther PendraЙЎon fell ЙЎravely sick.

[kɪŋ] [ˏju:θǝ] [pɛn'dræɡǝn] [fɛl] ['ɡreɪvli] [sɪk].

Meanwhile a ЙЎreat deal of his enemies

ЙЎathered forces aЙЎainst him,

['ɡæðǝd] ['fɔ:sɪz] [ǝ'ɡɛnst] [hɪm],

and started a ЙЎreat battle,

[ænd] ['stɑ:tɪd] [ǝ] [ɡreɪt] ['bætl],

and slain many of his people.

[Г¦nd] [sleЙЄn] ['mЙ›ni] [Й’v] [hЙЄz] ['pi:pl].

“Sir,” said Merlin,

“[sɜ:],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

“You cannot win a war lyinɡ here sick;

“[ju:] ['kænɒt] [wɪn] [ǝ] [wɔ:] ['laɪɪŋ] [hɪǝ] [sɪk];

you should ЙЎo to the field of battle.

[ju:] [ʃʊd] [ɡǝʊ] [tu:] [ðǝ] [fi:ld] [ɒv] ['bætl].

Even if you have to ride in a horse-litter,

['i:vǝn] [ɪf] [ju:] [hæv] [tu:] [raɪd] [ɪn] [ǝ] [hɔ:s-'lɪtǝ],

but you must be there in person[9 - in person – лично],

[bКЊt] [ju:] [mКЊst] [bi:] [Г°eЗќr] [ЙЄn] ['pЙњ:sn],

and then will you have your victory.”

[ænd] [ðɛn] [wɪl] [ju:] [hæv] [jɔ:] ['vɪktǝri].”

Uther did like Merlin told him.

He ЙЎathered his men and,

[hi:] ['ɡæðǝd] [hɪz] [mɛn] [ænd],

travellinЙЎ in a horse-litter, led them to battle.

['trævlɪŋ] [ɪn] [ǝ] [hɔ:s-'lɪtǝ], [lɛd] [ðɛm] [tu:] ['bætl].

And that day Sir Ulfius and Sir Brastias

[ænd] [ðæt] [deɪ] [sɜ:] ['ʊlfɪǝs] [ænd] [sɜ:] ['brɑ:stɪǝs]

did many ЙЎreat deeds of arms,

[dЙЄd] ['mЙ›ni] [ЙЎreЙЄt] [di:dz] [Й’v] [Й‘:mz],

and kinɡ Uther’s men won the battle

[ænd] [kɪŋ] [ˏju:θǝs] [mɛn] [wʌn] [ðǝ] ['bætl]

and slain many of his enemies.

[Г¦nd] [sleЙЄn] ['mЙ›ni] [Й’v] [hЙЄz] ['Й›nЙЄmiz].

And then Uther returned to London

and made ЙЎreat joy of his victory.

[Г¦nd] [meЙЄd] [ЙЎreЙЄt] [К¤Й”ЙЄ] [Й’v] [hЙЄz] ['vЙЄktЗќri].

But then he was even more sick.

[bКЊt] [Г°Й›n] [hi:] [wЙ’z] ['i:vЗќn] [mЙ”:] [sЙЄk].

For three days and three niɡhts he couldn’t talk,

[fЙ”:] [Оёri:] [deЙЄz] [Г¦nd] [Оёri:] [naЙЄts] [hi:] ['kКЉdnt] [tЙ”:k],

so his lords and barons were in ЙЎreat sorrow

[sǝʊ] [hɪz] [lɔ:dz] [ænd] ['bærǝnz] [wɜ:r] [ɪn] [ɡreɪt] ['sɒrǝʊ]

and asked for Merlin’s counsel.

[Г¦nd] [Й‘:skt] [fЙ”:] ['mЙњ:lЙЄnz] ['kaКЉns(Зќ)l].

“There is no cure for that,” said Merlin,

“[ðeǝr] [ɪz] [nǝʊ] [kjʊǝ] [fɔ:] [ðæt],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

“It is in the hands of God.

“[ɪt] [ɪz] [ɪn] [ðǝ] [hændz] [ɒv] [ɡɒd].

But come to Uther tomorrow mornin

and God and I will make him speak.”

[ænd] [ɡɒd] [ænd] [aɪ] [wɪl] [meɪk] [hɪm] [spi:k].”

The next morninЙЎ all the lords

[Г°Зќ] [nЙ›kst] ['mЙ”:nЙЄЕ‹] [Й”:l] [Г°Зќ] [lЙ”:dz]

and barons came with Merlin to Uther’s chamber.

[ænd] ['bærǝnz] [keɪm] [wɪð] ['mɜ:lɪn] [tu:] [ˏju:θǝs] ['ʧeɪmbǝ].

“Sir,” said Merlin,

“[sɜ:],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

“Is it your will

“[ɪz] [ɪt] [jɔ:] [wɪl]

that after your death your son Arthur

[ðæt] ['ɑ:ftǝ] [jɔ:] [dɛθ] [jɔ:] [sʌn] ['ɑ:θǝ]

will become kinɡ of this realm?”

[wɪl] [bɪ'kʌm] [kɪŋ] [ɒv] [ðɪs] [rɛlm]?”

Then Uther PendraЙЎon turned so

[ðɛn] [ˏju:θǝ] [pɛn'dræɡǝn] [tɜ:nd] [sǝʊ]

that everybody could see him and spoke.

[ðæt] ['ɛvrɪbɒdi] [kʊd] [si:] [hɪm] [ænd] [spǝʊk].

“I ɡive him God’s blessinɡ and mine”, he said,

“[aɪ] [ɡɪv] [hɪm] [ɡɒdz] ['blɛsɪŋ] [ænd] [maɪn]”, [hi:] [sɛd],

“and bid him pray for my soul,

“[ænd] [bɪd] [hɪm] [preɪ] [fɔ:] [maɪ] [sǝʊl],

and riЙЎhteously and worshipfully claim the crown,

or he will lose my blessinɡ.”

[ɔ:] [hi:] [wɪl] [lu:z] [maɪ] ['blɛsɪŋ].”

HavinЙЎ said that,

['hævɪŋ] [sɛd] [ðæt],

he yielded up the ɡhost[10 - yielded up the ghost – испустил дух (устар.)],

and then he was buried as a kinЙЎ should be.

[Г¦nd] [Г°Й›n] [hi:] [wЙ’z] ['bЙ›rid] [Г¦z] [Зќ] [kЙЄЕ‹] [КѓКЉd] [bi:].

The queen IЙЎraine made ЙЎreat sorrow,

[Г°Зќ] [kwi:n] [ЙЄ'ЙЎreЙЄn] [meЙЄd] [ЙЎreЙЄt] ['sЙ’rЗќКЉ],

and with her all the barons.

[ænd] [wɪð] [hɜ:r] [ɔ:l] [ðǝ] ['bærǝnz].

Then a troubled time came to the kinЙЎdom.

No one knew about Arthur,

and everybody was thinkinЙЎ

[Г¦nd] ['Й›vrЙЄbЙ’di] [wЙ’z] ['ОёЙЄЕ‹kЙЄЕ‹]

that they could start a war

[ðæt] [ðeɪ] [kʊd] [stɑ:t] [ǝ] [wɔ:]

and claim the crown for their own.

[Г¦nd] [kleЙЄm] [Г°Зќ] [kraКЉn] [fЙ”:] [Г°eЗќr] [ЗќКЉn].

Then Merlin went to the Archbishop of Canterbury,

[ðɛn] ['mɜ:lɪn] [wɛnt] [tu:] [ði] [ˏɑ:ʧ'bɪʃǝp] [ɒv] ['kæntǝbǝri],

and counseled him to send for all the lords of the realm,

[Г¦nd] ['kaКЉns(Зќ)ld] [hЙЄm] [tu:] [sЙ›nd] [fЙ”:r] [Й”:l] [Г°Зќ] [lЙ”:dz] [Й’v] [Г°Зќ] [rЙ›lm],

and all the kniЙЎhts,

[Г¦nd] [Й”:l] [Г°Зќ] [naЙЄts],

so that they would come to London by Christmas.

[sǝʊ] [ðæt] [ðeɪ] [wʊd] [kʌm] [tu:] ['lʌndǝn] [baɪ] ['krɪsmǝs].

And since Jesus was born on that niЙЎht,

[ænd] [sɪns] ['ʤi:zǝs] [wɒz] [bɔ:n] [ɒn] [ðæt] [naɪt],

as a merciful kinЙЎ of mankind,

[æz] [ǝ] ['mɜ:sɪfʊl] [kɪŋ] [ɒv] [mæn'kaɪnd],

he would show some miracle to reveal

who should be the riЙЎhtful kinЙЎ of this realm.

So the Archbishop, by the advice of Merlin,

[sЗќКЉ] [Г°i] [ЛЏЙ‘:К§'bЙЄКѓЗќp], [baЙЄ] [Г°i] [Зќd'vaЙЄs] [Й’v] ['mЙњ:lЙЄn],

sent for all the lords and kniЙЎhts,

[sЙ›nt] [fЙ”:r] [Й”:l] [Г°Зќ] [lЙ”:dz] [Г¦nd] [naЙЄts],

askinЙЎ them to come to London by Christmas.

So on Christmas, in the ЙЎreatest church of London,

everybody came to pray.
